Community News - Seismic Cloaks
In an article published in Physical Review Letters, called "Experiments on Seismic Metamaterials: Molding Surface Waves", a large-scale experiment was described that examined the ability to control the direction of seismic surface waves using a periodic array of boreholes - a seismic metamaterial. In the study, the incoming wave was directed away from a structure to be protected, suggesting the potential for earthquake mitigation. Of course, a great deal of research must still be performed before this can be realised. In addition, although this study was more a reflector, this large-scale experiment is a step towards realising a seismic cloak. More discussion of this work is available, such as on Gizmodo.
