Community News - Smart Transformation Optics

Posted on February 17, 2014

Transformation Optics (TO) is a method of designing the material properties required to realise a particular electromagnetic device. However, standard TO requires a redesign whenever the target geometry changes. By combining the control of electromagnetic behaviour with control of the mechanical behaviour in so-called smart metamaterials, smart transformation optics (STO) extends the range of devices that can be made and helps make devices robust to deformations that may distort the original geometry in the real world. A recent article in Scientific Reports, by researchers at Yonsei University in South Korea and at Duke University in the US, describes a number of example devices designed in this way, and provides analytical derivations for the design of STO devices.
